Our objective is to define a Software Defined Perimeter (SDP) in a declarative manner, allowing network communication to be transparently encrypted so only direct, authorized communication partners can access unencrypted traffic.  

Here’s a glimpse into how we’re achieving this: 

  • Registered Device Access: We are working on scenarios where only authorized users can connect via devices that have been registered beforehand.  
  • Continuous Attestation: These registered devices are transparently attested during registration and with every connection request. This attestation ensures that users can only access services and data when running on sufficiently protected devices with the correct software.  
  • The SCONE Network Shield: The foundation of this transparent authentication and authorization is the SCONE network shield. 
  • It’s a security component that encrypts network communications within the SCONE platform.  
  • It automatically encrypts TCP connections without requiring any modifications to your applications, making it incredibly valuable for legacy services that don’t support TLS encryption. 
  • The network shield ensures all application network traffic is encrypted, even without the application’s direct cooperation. 
  • Operating as an intermediary layer between an application and the operating system, it leverages secure, isolated “enclaves” (created by technologies like SGX, TDX, or SEV-SNP). This means even privileged system administrators cannot intercept or read your encrypted data. 
  • Integrated Attestation: The Network Shield integrates with SCONE’s attestation service to secure communications by verifying that communicating parties run inside enclaves, using TLS authentication, and providing certificates proving enclave residency.
